The Linac MR device used in radiotherapy treatment does not damage the surrounding tissues by pinpointing the tumor with a special imaging method.
Radiation therapy is frequently used in the treatment of cancer. 90% of applications are realized with the Linac device called linear accelerator. Thanks to the imaging method of this device, which delivers high-energy x-rays to the region of the patient’s tumor, we know where to shoot. Previously, the camera was integrated with the devices built into the camera and imaging was done. Then a scan was done. However, all these imaging modalities showed neither tumor nor the normal tissues of the patient. For this purpose, by introducing the needle into the region of interest, metal markers were placed and the tumor was tried to be seen indirectly. Since the application could showed neither soft tissues nor tumors, the images were taken according to the bones.Today, the new device brings together the MR and Linac device and offers a better visualization.The first version of the device used in 2015 for the first time in the world; was not an x-ray, it worked with cobalt 60. Then the one that works with X-ray was developed. Currently, MR Linac devices were used only in the United States and the Netherlands and now available in a few centers in Turkey.

When the patient is lying in the device, the MR is first taken and we can see where the tumor is located. Then, the irradiation begins. This is done both in the form of a snapshot and a video. When the patient is lying down, we can understand if the tumor is moving or not. If necessary, by asking the patient to hold his breath, we can thus limit the mobility of the tumor. But in some cases, Even when the person holds his breath, the tumor can still move.However with this device they can all be followed.
The tumor is visible and irradiated
Although the linear accelerator can be used in all tumors, it is much more useful in the treatment of tumors such as lung, prostate, abdomen, liver metastases, cancers, pancreatic cancers and others. In the treatments performed after MR Linac, the most effective results are obtained from pancreatic cancer. The success rate moved up from 10% to 90%. This success, considered as a great revolution in the treatment, could be applied to other tumors.Because the desired dose to give to the tumor, which can be seen in the residential area, can be adjusted. So, better treatment can be done.
Another feature of the device is that the location of the tumor is visible. In the past, safety limits were set around tumors.This section was actually normal tissue. With MR Linac, the tumor is visible and irradiated. During pinpoint, it is very important to see the target. This can only be done with MR and treatments can now be performed without limits.
